This may be quite overwhelming.  I don't really recommend it, because a lot of
it discusses non-Unicode stuff (which you don't need), and the other lot
discusses details of OpenType font format (which you don't need again).

Haven't seen this one.  I've heard some good things about Unicode Demystified
though.  However, I think you can do very well without a thick book.  I'm
trying to find a good online resource for you though.  Will get back to you
when/if I find.
