FWIW, if you remove the CPPFLAGS setting and just specify CFLAGS and
CXXFLAGS, then configure runs successfully.
However, gcc then complains at compile time:
g++-4.2: -E, -S, -save-temps and -M options are not allowed with
multiple -arch flags
So that didn't get us very much further...
