You'll want to update to a newer version of Mesa.  In particular, Mesa 9.2.3
contains a lot of important fixes for Sandybridge GPU hangs, which greatly
reduce the frequency of the hangs.  You could also try Mesa 10.0.2, which has a
few more fixes.

Please let us know if you still experience this issue with a newer Mesa.
