looks to me like it is something with the xf86-video-intel code.

I re-compiled the driver to commit de7185bbf48ca2f617466b98328d0fdae4df1b44 
from October 1st, and the issue for me is gone.

I think something happened between that one and
9a5ca59d2b7b209e6f56dd3f94d4ae6f06e1ecdc on the 15th of October -- that is when
I started having this issue on my SNB Intel chip.
