I have to admit being very puzzled by the behaviour. Strongly suggests that
some GPU memory is incoherent on the first run (invalid TLB or bad caching
etc). I would be very interested in seeing if you can build the package for the
iso yourself with the latest drivers and then trying SNA (either by building
--with-default-accel=sna or by adding 

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Device0"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "AccelMethod" "sna"

to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf -- actually probably easier to rebuild ;-)
