OK - well, things work for me with the code rearrangement above, with and
without the one-line patch. But maybe the rearrangement won't work for some
other machines.

I can test other possible solutions. Would be nice to have the display working
with the stock kernel. Maybe resort to some kind of bpp=xx module parameter if
nothing else.
