If I follow the code correctly, drm_fb_helper_restore_fbdev_mode should restore
the backlight (through the crtc enable in the mode set). Maybe I'm missing
something. And maybe I don't understand the problem...

Daniel Martin, is this still an issue for you with the latest kernels? Please
provide a dmesg from early boot to the issue, with drm.debug=0xe module
parameter so we can see what's really going on with the backlight.
