So I should be trying an updated xorg-intel driver on top of an *unpatched*
kernel? I thought that, since the distro-supplied kernel works fine with the
distro-supplied xorg-intel driver, and the failure occurs only if I swap the
kernel, it must therefore be a kernel bug.
