To clarify, picture on external diplay is fine, and I can use
gnome-control-center to control the internal display, and internal display
backlight behaves as expected when turning internal display on or off. No
complaints about being unable to switch the internal display on, and it
switches on and windows can be moved there. It's just there's no image on the
internal display.
