Having downgraded to Mesa 9.1.1 from the stable repository I've found that the
problems are gone (so far) for kernels 3.9.6 and 3.10.0rc6, although still
present at 3.8.x.

Sorry about that confusion.  But I'm grateful for the attention and help.
