The redraw issue looks to be an error in Xnest. If you watch xtrace xterm
whilst moving a terminal over the Xnest window exposing the contained xterm,
you see lots of:
Event Expose(12) window=0x200001b x=65535 y=65220 width=1 height=316 count=0

Ho hum.
