After the first modeset to switch on the LVDS, the backlight is set to 0.

Can you please check what xrandr --verbose --output LVDS1 reports after that
initial modeset (and the LVDS is still blank) and then try playing with xrandr
--output LVDS1 --set Backlight <x> and directly setting /sys/class/backlight/*
