[Bug 75385] Dell Latitude E5440 screen goes blank when external VGA monitor connected

The blanking occurs in a call to  _XReply (dpy, (xReply *) &rep, 0, xFalse). 
Not sure this is helping, but this takes me into the x11 extensions.  Hopefully
will soon get into the driver.
