OK, this is wrong.  It WAS working fine and in the same day suddenly stopped
working fine- having the "chimpmunks" sounding audio through displayport/hdmi
again (playing too fast and too high pitch).  Rebooting changes nothing.  I
can't figure out what changed, but I am still working on it to try and narrow
down what is happening.

Sorry for the false hope.
