          Priority: medium
            Bug ID: 82836

          Assignee: intel-gfx-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
Summary: Web browser (chromium) hangs, /var/log/syslog
simultaneously shows "[drm] stuck on render ring"
        QA Contact: intel-gfx-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
          Severity: normal
    Classification: Unclassified
                OS: Linux (All)
          Reporter: jason at byteboost.com
          Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
            Status: NEW
           Version: XOrg CVS
         Component: DRM/Intel
           Product: DRI

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) with the most recent updates as of 11:00 PM
EDT. So far, this problem only seems to happen while I am using the Chromium
web browser (Version 36.0.1985.125). I am not aware of any definite way of
reproducing the bug, but it seems to happen most often when I do a number of
things in rapid succession, like scroll the page, switch between tabs, or click
on one link and then another. Chromium unexpectedly hangs, and I eventually
have to kill it. The rest of the system seems to operate as usual, and there do
not seem to be any CPU or memory issues at the time. However, /var/log/syslog
seems to report the following error whenever the hanging occurs (three separate
occasions tonight):

[drm] stuck on render ring

The first time this occurred, /var/log/syslog included the following, more
detailed message:

Aug 19 22:57:53 optimus kernel: [ 5568.972472] [drm] stuck on render ring
Aug 19 22:57:53 optimus kernel: [ 5568.972481] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to
/sys/class/drm/card0/error
Aug 19 22:57:53 optimus kernel: [ 5568.972482] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a
bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
Aug 19 22:57:53 optimus kernel: [ 5568.972483] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug
report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
Aug 19 22:57:53 optimus kernel: [ 5568.972484] [drm] drm/i915 developers can
then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
Aug 19 22:57:53 optimus kernel: [ 5568.972485] [drm] The gpu crash dump is
required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.

I tried to attached /sys/class/drm/card0/error, but it is a completely empty (0
bytes) file.

In case it's relevant, the version number for the video driver package
installed on my system (Ubuntu's xserver-xorg-video-intel package) is
2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.
