below errors shown after desktop (but not mouse pointer) freezes for 10 seconds
then seems to unfreeze. often have chromium open and have been doing things in
quick succession. happens most days.

[55024.663150] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx
stack, including userspace.

against DRI -> DRM/Intel
[55024.663152] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right
component if it's not a kernel issue.
[55024.663152] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so
please always attach it.

crash dump mentioned above is empty; hardware config:
