Yes, xrandr switches mode correctly. Then something tells to switch back. Do
you have a display manager running in the background responding to RandR
notifications?

What you might like to try is gdb Xorg and "b __sna_crtc_set_mode" to see where
the mode resets are originating from (i.e. whether they are due to client
requests or internal). I suspect external requests, like a display manager
applying its configuration everytime it notices a change.
