Ok, no worries - thanks for trying to nail it down.

One relatively quick task you could do for me is compile xf86-video-intel with
--enable-debug=full and attach the debug Xorg.0.log for the non-persistent
23.96Hz modeset. I am not sure if it will shed more light, but it might.
