After doing more reading and asking questions in the #ubuntu IRC channel I
upgraded to a new kernel version yesterday afternoon, 18 Dec. The version now
is Linux localhost 3.14.0-031400-generic #201403310035 SMP Mon Mar 31 04:36:23
UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux 

If the problem happens again after the update I'll post back for some more
assistance. I'll also post if it seems to have been fixed with the update. 

One thing of note, though there is a black screen with only the mouse cursor
when this happens the system continues to function normally. For instance
fetchmail and procmail continue to fetch and process email and so forth.
