Testing VGA will have the same effect as testing HDMI for me. I was just
looking for something that's not eDP :)

What I meant was: boot the machine in the "bugged" state, then, after X is
running, run something like "xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1024x768", see if it's
still bad-quality, then run "xrandr --output eDP1 --auto" and see if it's still
bad quality.
