Time to bring the cannon:

Please boot in the "bugged case", then run "sudo ./intel_reg_read 0x40000 -c
65536 > registers-bad.txt", then boot on the "non-bugged nomodeset case", and
run the same command, redirecting its output to another file, then attach both
files here.

Do you have a way to boot this machine in legacy BIOS non-UEFI mode? Maybe
perhaps through some distro live-cd, a pendrive or a spare hard drive? Can you
reproduce the bug with it? If no, please run the command above and attach its
output here too.
