Hey Charles, you need to edit the grub config. For Linux Mint it should be
in /etc/default. Look for the below line and change it,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

change to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.modeset=0"

afterwards, you need to run update-grub2 as root.
