Install libtool first:

$> sudo apt-get install libtool

step 4(d) should be  

$> ./autogen.sh --prefix=$MY_DISTRO_PREFIX --libdir=$MY_DISTRO_LIBDIR

(BTW you can specify prefix and libdir directly:
 $> ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu)
