What hardware are you using? I have a

   MSI MS-7817/CSM-B85M-E45 (MS-7817), BIOS V10.5 05/30/2014

Maybe this is MSI (or bios setting) specific.

Can you get access to a comparable chipset to test this?

Do the errors logged to syslog make any sense to you at all?
