"mode detection issue" is an understatement.

The machines in question have a MIPI DSI [1] display instead of the more common
eDP or LVDS or somesuch. Work is in progress to have the drivers for that
upstream, but unfortunately I don't expect them to be merged before v3.16. And
being new features rather than fixes, they will not be backported to stable
kernels.

I hope that answers your question, although I'm sure this is not what you
wanted to hear.
