Please note:
I did this
# echo mem > /sys/power/state 
from a terminal with the gdm service stopped (i.e. as close to init 3 as I can
get)

this suspended the machine, and it restored successfully. According to "Linux
Graphics How to debug suspend-resume issues" this indicates a DRM bug
