You've probably simply broken your intel gfx driver and now the systems is
running in uefi fallback mode using the firmware driver. When you reboot you
have the real intel gfx driver again.

You can achieve this easier with i915.modeset=0 on your kernel cmdline, but
that means hw accel for opengl, video or anything.
