As I said earlier, recovery from the symptoms is a lot easier now than it was
just before I upgraded (which was really hard, even cold reboots wouldn't
guarantee it), so I've had a chance to find an easy way to trigger this.

I've just rebooted into the patched kernel. What I do to trigger is: from X,
open lid, the display goes to mirror mode, then go to tty1 (a getty) and close
lid. Due to GNOME, logind or whatever, the system thinks it needs to shut down
even if there's an external display. After opening the lid again, this bug
triggers.

What happened now is that the first time it appeared to behave, the system came
back with a pair of flashes on the LVDS and then stabilised, and when switching
to the X tty, it worked as it should. When I tried again, it did stay in
flashing mode until I pulled the DP cable and put it back in.
