Part of the issue seems to me that four incorrect resolutions are detected
(1024x768 800x600 848x480 640x480) and the system keeps trying on its own to
revert to 1024x768 anytime something like xrandr is run, and which is not
supported by the monitor (which only supports 2560x1800 and 1280x800). This
behavior is new to Ubuntu 14.04 somehow, but I attempted to re-install previous
kernels, all the way up to 3.5.0-49-generic, and the problem persists.
