Update:  The issue described seems to be resolved in Ubuntu 14.10 (just
installed to check).

However, still present in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
Tried updating the Ubuntu kernel to 3.17.1 (from kernel.ubuntu.com) but this
made no difference.
Also tried using the Intel Graphics Installer 1.0.6 for Linux to update
graphics drivers (both with the stock 3.13 kernel and the updated 3.17 kernel)
but crash remains as described.
