With a build of 3.17-rc6 and testing --

* with both RHEL6 & RHEL7
* with & without "drm.debug=0xe" on the kernel command line
* in both text and graphical modes

-- in all permutations, I can now say that this issue has finally been
resolved.

It is irritating that no clear reproducer could be identified and I suspect
that the trigger will never be known. So it is best filed under the heading of
"one of life's little mysteries".

I shall now close this bug as "resolved/code_fix" and thank you for helping.
