Certainly, I do believe the system is still 'usable' but it's preventing the
only screen I've got connected to it from working, which makes it difficult to
interact with.

With regards to systemd; I believe you are right. But I've had a hard time
nailing down what is provoking it since KMS works when I run without it. For
the record; I miss systemd.
