Yes indeed it gets complicated with merges. 
Personally if I compile virgin/testing/drm-intel as of today, I get a GPU hang
on kodi boot (attached dmesg-4.0.0 and crashlog-4.0.0) with a segmentation
fault.
Else, if I revert before the patchset including:

8fb55197e64d5988ec57b54e973daeea72c3f2ff
drm/i915: Agressive downclocking on Baytrail 

It does work, although with the patchset too but it ends up hanging with
>=1080p videos. That's weird as this commit doesn't seem to be linked to the
original problem, so it's like if this was simply exacerbating another
underlying, older issue that might've been missed. For now I'm running 4.1 from
Linus github and it works fine...for now.
