I tried the following as mentioned by Winni:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="drm.debug=0 drm.vblankoffdelay=1 i915.semaphores=0"

The screen timed out as usual (still able to move the mouse cursor around,
resize windows, see the cursor change, etc.), but this time it never came back.
 I even tried "ps aux | grep compiz" and "kill -9 ####" on compiz and
compiz-decorator, which usually causes it to reload, but I ended up having to
restart the computer as I didn't know what else to try.

I'm reopening the bug for this reason.  If you feel I shouldn't, then perhaps I
should reopen my original here:

anything I can do to assist in finding a solution, don't hesitate to ask!
