Hm, sounds like after over a year of random walking multiple people have nailed
this to cpu cstates, and the gpu driver changing behaviour slightly was just
the canary in the coal mine here.

I tried to read through all comments here (gosh is there a lot of that) and
didn't find anything to contradict that.
