I'm sorry it took me so long to test this. With my Venue 8 Pro 3845, I'm afraid
the problem persists with 4.4.0-rc5-amd64 version 4.4~rc5-1~exp1 from Debian
experimental. Unless I pass 'nomodeset' on the kernel command line I still get
a black screen when X starts. Reopening as requested in Comment 19.
