Confirmed, Debian's xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.917-1~exp1 fixes both the
brightness control issue and the initally black screen when I'm testing with
Linux 3.16.

So there is another way to fix this. No idea what this means for my proposed
kernel patch and all those other similar disable_native_backlight quirks.
