Sorry for the delay, I tweaked the initial patch until I was able to start up
and blank/restore the outputs with DPMS on/off. That patch is

    sna: Be robust in handling DPMS failures

    If we fail to turn off an output via DPMS, disable the entire CRTC in
    order to blank the output and save the screeen/power.

I still haven't worked out where the EINVAL is coming from that's triggering
the failure in the first place, but now it should be behaving itself even if we
cannot set the DPMS mode on individual outputs.
