tried Jani's patch on a SLES / using 4.1-rc4. It improves the situation a lot!
All active/passive DP adapters I could find now work flawlessly when
hot-plugged into running system.

I have found one DP->VGA adapter which still does not hot-plug even with this
patch. Please see attached drm.debug=14 output.
