xrandr --verbose after restarting X

As far as I can see, xrandr thinks things are fine.  Input devices function. 
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight shows full brightness.  The built-in
display is just off for some reason.  (Note that the display is dead even if I
don't restart X.)
