I actually noticed that the whole X hangs, because my WM doesn't respond
anymore (i.e. can't switch to other virtual desktops) after RetroArch hangs.

The only thing I can do is switch back to a TTY (i.e. Ctrl+Alt+F2) and back to
X in order for the image to update/refresh itself.

After that my desktop is usable again.
