To follow up with my experiences:

I've tried Daniel Vetter's patch as attached to this issue, both standalone on
top of 4.6.1 and as it was merged into 4.6.2.

This patch, by itself, significantly reduces but does not eliminate the
occasional black 'flicker'. At this point, the rate is reduced sufficiently
that the system's actually usable - I maybe see one or two flickers over about
half an hour of typical usage, rather than several per minute. Using
i915.enable_psr=0 still makes them go away completely.
