could perhaps help with some of the problems (with 1080p, but likely not with
1080i).

In the log I see
[  115.069564] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU
pipe B FIFO underrun
[  115.069599] [drm:intel_pch_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* PCH
transcoder B FIFO underrun
but those could just be a red herring due to old kernel and/or this being an
ILK which still likes to report spurious underruns occasionally.
