I think there may be a couple of problems here.

What I'm seeing is that before my fix, once the display went off, it would
never come back on.

With the fix it will now come on if I haven't left it too long but if I leave
it overnight then it will always be dead. The screensaver is set to switch off
after an hour (but I've had it as low as 1 minute, and it still fails
overnight.

Last night I tried with the drm-intel-next branch. Kernel is checked out at:

  e3d5457 drm/i915: Ignore stale wm register values on resume on ilk-bdw (v2)

Still fails to work.
