I think there might be multiple issues here. The commit identified by andram
only applies to the 4.6 kernel but the initial report was about version 4.4.
Reverting commit edde361 did not fix the problem for me either.

However as Maarten started to investigate the bug based on edde361 I think it's
best to let him proceed here without distractions about "same symptom - maybe
other cause". I started to bisect the problem myself but I'll file a separate
issue when I'm done in order not to spam this report here.
