Wow, thanks for the hint! Although booting with i915.fastboot=1 or
video=1280x800 at 60 alone doesn't fix the problem for me with vanilla 4.7.2,
using both options together gets the display working! I'll do more testing with
it.

My device is iWork 8, with the exact same CPU and display, like many other
budget Baytrail-based tablets.
