I see that not much work on this issue is done.

Currently with 
Linux 4.8.0-994-generic #201609022202 SMP Sat Sep 3 02:04:48 UTC 2016 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

after trying to switch to 1920x1080 (or anything above 1440x900) this is
written to dmesg and external monitor will switch itself off (standby) as it
does not seem to get any signal (so nothing changed, just the crash is not
there anymore with this latest kernel version):
