I tried current drm-tip tree which includes this patch. HEAD is:
417babaa12ad98dad2c39f361612f1afe6894816

However, still does not work. also, for some reason that might be related so
some other thing, the display won't work even using Gnome. Odd. I'm going to
attach dmesgs in a jiff.
