Google brought me here as I am having the same issue as Bastian since upgrading
from 4.9.11 (worked great) to 4.10.1 (Xorg won't start):

Not sure if this is the same issue as I have dual Nvidia GTX 980s (nouveau).
Reverting to 4.9 fixes stuff and my desktop opens on startup. Would be happy
to open another bug if you desire but the PM stuff seems to make them related?
