Steps Taken:

git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/drm-tip drm-tip

I built commit e4e6acb231bcfb81e010550990cca19cac955f91 like this:

make oldconfig
        (pressing RETURN for each option, which (I assume) accepts the default)
make
sudo make modules_install install
reboot with drm.debug=0xe

RESULTS

uname -a
        Linux sucker 4.11.0-rc4+ #1 SMP Thu Mar 30 13:21:52 BST 2017 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The big monitor now shows something (a breakthrough !):  vertical banding, and
vertical lines which appear to be moving upwards.
